What is the difference between Junior Blues vs Waves, and PHL vs SCHL?

Our Junior Blues teams will compete in the Premier Hockey League (PHL), and our Warwick Waves teams will compete in the South Coast Hockey League (SCHL).  The PHL has a wider footprint with games spread throughout New England, whereas the SCHL footprint is concentrated to southeastern New England only.

PHL teams will be set at 18U-16U-14U-12U-10U levels.  Our goal is to produce the strongest team possible for each division with the intention of having single birth year teams. These teams can be dual birth year based on talent evaluations.  Second teams are possible if there’s enough talent and interest.  We anticipate to take 14 skaters and 2 goalies per team.

SCHL teams will be dual birth year teams ranging from 8U-A-18U.  We will field as many teams as numbers and ice allows for the season.

How are tryouts evaluated?

We will have a tryout for players that wish to join our PHL/Blues teams. After PHL teams are selected we will have another tryout for our SCHL/Waves teams.  Players who sign up for PHL tryouts and do not get placed on a PHL team DO NOT have to register again for Wave tryouts.  Tryouts will be conducted by WJHA coaches in conjunction with Toby O’Brien and Overspeed Hockey.

How are teams selected?

Teams will be chosen based on evaluations from WJHA Board members and long-term coaches in the organization.  No coaches or Board members will be allowed to evaluate the age bracket in which they have a player.  Our goal is to construct teams by having 13-14 skaters and 1-2 goalies per team.

When are teams announced, and what are the terms for commitment?

For PHL tryouts, players can be notified they’ve been selected after the first or second tryout session.  A deposit and commitment letter will be signed that night.  All PHL players will be notified if placed on a team no later than 72 hours after the last tryout.  Players not selected will also be notified and given the option to come back for tryout for our Waves teams.  Any player who paid for PHL tryouts will NOT have to pay again for Waves tryouts.  All costs are covered with one fee.  Waves players will be notified of placement within 72 of last tryout and will have 24 hours to confirm commitment.

When will coaches be announced?

We cannot determine who will coach our teams without first knowing how many teams we have.  Therefore, we must wait until after tryouts and after all commitment letters are registrations are assembled before coaches can be determined.  Your coach will be announced at that point in time.

How are coaches determined?

First, the league reviews all candidates that have submitted their coaching registrations via our website.  You must register to be considered.  Once all registrations are in, the Board of Directors will decide which coaches will be awarded a team.  We are looking for mentors with strong hockey knowledge.  https://warwickjuniorhockey.sportngin.com/register/form/119239897

Because our divisions can grow & shrink each year based on turnout, and because multiple coaches can register for teams, the Board always starts fresh each year.  This means that you may not have the same coach year over year.
