Learn to Skate

Schedule: Saturday 8:30am - 9:00 am at Thayer Arena  UPDATED TIME!

Cost: $100

Program runs October 26th until beginning of March

2020.  Final skate date will be determined after the new year.

The Learn to Skate Program is a program developed in Warwick Junior Hockey Association. In the past when 4-year-olds were allowed into the Instructional Program, in most cases, it was difficult. The main problem was that the attention span and endurance of the 4 year olds would not afford them the ability to stay on the ice for an hour. In addition their motor skills may not be developed to handle the accelerated skill-learning environment. The Learn to Skate Program was developed to acclimate younger players to the hockey environment and make them comfortable with this new experience. In addition the smaller teaching group size will provide more individual instruction. The Learn to Skate Program is a transitional program into the Instructional Program.

GENERAL INFORMATION
•  1/2 hour of ice time per week
•  Saturday mornings
•  All sessions are at Warwick Thayer Arena (front rink)

One parent or responsible adult is required to be in the rink anytime their child is on the ice. There are situations, such as sickness or injury which would require players to leave the ice.

*** This requirement is strictly enforced! ***

EQUIPMENT
Each player is required to have the following properly fitted equipment.
•  Hockey skates which have been sized for the player's feet
•  HECC approved helmet, with a full face mask, properly fitted for the player
•  Elbow and knee pads ( worn underneath outer clothing )
•  Gloves (winter gloves are OK)
•  Do not overdress your child , normally a sweatshirt and sweat pants are sufficient.

There are Instructional starter kits available from the local hockey shops for approximately $100. These shops will properly fit all the equipment and provide good used skates to save money.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
The program will concentrate on teaching the basic skating skills in a non-threatening environment. The following basic skating skills will be taught and emphasized during the program:
•  Hockey stance and balance
•  Forward skating
•  Gliding
•  Introduction to stopping
•  Introduction to backwards skating

Coaching to skater ratio will be approximately 3 to 1, providing very intensive personal teaching environment.

Each ice session will include approximately 20 minutes of instruction and 10 minutes of skill practice in the form of a game.

LEARN TO PLAY

The next step after the Learn to Skate Program is the Learn to Play Program which is a progressive learning experience, which teaches basic hockey skills to beginner skaters in a fun and an accelerated method. Learn to Play develops a complete hockey skill foundation that is needed for the rest of their hockey experience. For more information on this program refer to the “ Learn to Play” link above.
